Exploring Aurora, Colorado: A Hidden Gem Just Outside Denver!

When most people think of Colorado, their minds jump straight to Denver, the Rocky Mountains or perhaps Boulder’s quirky charm. But just east of Denver lies a vibrant and often-overlooked city that deserves a spot on every traveller’s radar: Aurora, Colorado!

Known for its cultural diversity, outdoor adventures and rich local art scene, Aurora is more than just a Denver suburb. No, sir - it’s a destination all its own! My friend Charlie spent a long weekend here and was surprised by how much there is to do, see, and (especially) eat. Whether you're a nature lover, foodie, art enthusiast or just looking for somewhere new to explore, Aurora has something for you.

Top Things to Do in Aurora, Colorado

So here’s what Charlie discovered during her visit - and why you might want to add Aurora to your next Colorado itinerary! Thanks for tips, Charlie, much appreciated - over to you!

Start Outdoors: Nature in the City

One of the best things about Aurora is how seamlessly it blends urban life with outdoor access. The trip started with a visit to Cherry Creek State Park, and honestly, I could’ve spent the entire weekend there! The park is massive: think hiking, biking, paddleboarding, and even a swim beach! I rented a paddleboard and spent a peaceful morning gliding across the reservoir with the mountains in the distance. Another spot that’s perfect for outdoor enthusiasts is the Aurora Reservoir. It’s less crowded than Cherry Creek and has a beautiful 8-mile trail that circles the entire lake (perfect for running, biking, or just strolling at sunset). I even saw a few people kayaking!

If you’re visiting with kids, there’s a sandy beach and clear shallow water, making it a safe and scenic place to splash around. For something more off the beaten path, I headed to the Plains Conservation Center. This place feels like stepping back in time: a wide expanse of prairie, with replica 1800s sod homes and tipis, plus loads of wildlife. It’s quiet, peaceful and very educational! I learned more about Colorado’s high plains ecosystem than I expected (and the sunset over the open landscape was unforgettable, you mustn't miss it!).

Cultural Gems and Local History

If you're into history or just want a break from the sun, Aurora has several spots that dive into its local roots. I made a stop at the Aurora History Museum, a small but well-curated space that tells the story of the city’s growth, immigration patterns and key historical moments. There's also the Blanche A. Wilson House, a preserved Queen Anne-style home from the late 1800s: it’s like peeking into Aurora’s Victorian past (complete with antique furniture and original architecture!)

Another unexpected gem is the Wings Over the Rockies Air & Space Museum. Located on a former Air Force base, this museum features vintage aircraft, flight simulators and exhibits about both aviation and space exploration. Even if you’re not a huge aviation buff, it’s a fascinating visit - and if you have kids or teens in tow, they’ll be obsessed, for sure! And for performing arts lovers, don’t miss the Aurora Fox Arts Center. Housed in a historic building downtown, this small theatre hosts plays, musicals and dance shows throughout the year. It’s intimate and community-driven (which is exactly the kind of local art vibe I love discovering while travelling).

A Feast of Flavours from All Around

Let’s talk food because if there’s one thing Aurora really excels at, it’s international cuisine! The city is one of the most culturally diverse in Colorado and that shows up in its restaurants.

A walk down Havana Street is like taking a global food tour. One night I had Korean BBQ, followed by authentic Ethiopian coffee at a café just two blocks away. The next day I tried vegan Venezuelan arepas and later sipped Vietnamese iced coffee while browsing local shops. The sheer variety is overwhelming in the best way possible! One place you must visit is The Night Sky Garden! While there are no vegan restaurants in Aurora (plenty of spots with vegan option, tho), we definitely recommend paying a visit to this wonderful place.

Public Art and Sculptural Wonders

Aurora takes public art seriously and some of its installations are genuinely awe-inspiring. My favourite was the Umi sculpture, a 21-foot Gaia-like creation by artist Daniel Popper. It’s part nature goddess, part forest spirit and completely mesmerising. Located in The Aurora Highlands development, it’s totally free to view and makes a fantastic photo op. Then there’s the Liberty sculpture at Hogan Park: a towering 58-foot stainless steel woman holding a torch. It’s a modern take on Lady Liberty, designed to reflect both the environment and the viewer’s sense of freedom. Seeing it up close is impressive; it’s visible from I-70 and lights up at night. Don’t skip it!

Where to Shop and Chill

If you’re in the mood to browse, grab a drink or just enjoy some casual people-watching, head to Southlands Lifestyle Center. It’s a sprawling outdoor shopping district with a mix of big brands, boutique shops, restaurants and a movie theatre. During the warmer months, they host farmers markets and live music - it’s got a laid-back, small-town feel with all the conveniences of a larger city!

Thinking of Staying Longer? Why Renting in Aurora Makes Sense

After a few days in Aurora, it’s easy to imagine staying a while. Whether you're a remote worker, a digital nomad, or just someone who wants a slower-paced base near Denver, renting an apartment in Aurora offers some serious perks. You get access to the same great amenities - outdoor spaces, diverse food, and cultural events - at a lower cost than downtown Denver - all in all, Aurora apartments are really worth it! Many apartments are close to transit options too, making it easy to explore the metro area without a car (which is such a rare thing in the USA). Plus, with neighbourhoods ranging from family-friendly to up-and-coming arts districts, you can find a space that fits your vibe! If you’re looking for that perfect mix of city access and suburban comfort, Aurora might just be your ideal Colorado home base.

Final Thoughts: Why Aurora is Worth a Visit

Aurora might not be the first name that comes to mind when planning a Colorado vacation, but that’s exactly why you should go! It’s less crowded than Denver, more diverse than many of its neighbors, and packed with unique experiences - from lakeside sunsets to global food, from historic homes to towering sculptures. Whether you're here for a day, a long weekend or perhaps for even longer, Aurora offers a fresh, authentic slice of Colorado life. And who knows? Like me, you might leave wondering why it took you so long to visit in the first place. And if, like many others, you're charmed by the place and decide to move there, there are plenty of wonderful two bedroom apartments in Aurora CO to choose from!
