When I set off on my 5-day trip to Meghalaya, I had no idea how awe-inspiring the views would be. Meghalaya’s reputation as the Abode of Clouds had always intrigued me, and after reading several positive Thrillophilia reviews, I knew I could trust them to curate a seamless and memorable adventure [This post was written by our friend Ritesh - thanks Ritesh!]
Day 1: Arrival in Shillong
My adventure began with a smooth landing in Guwahati, where Thrillophilia’s representative greeted me and escorted me to a private vehicle for the drive to Shillong. The journey itself set the tone for the trip, with scenic views of rolling hills and verdant valleys. We stopped at Umiam Lake for a while which added a magical touch to our tour. The shimmering and still waters reflected the sky like a mirror. On reaching Shillong, I checked into a charming hotel with a hillside view. The check-in was hassle-free, and the staff’s hospitality immediately made me feel at home. My room, adorned with warm wooden furnishings and local art, was the perfect retreat. After lunch, I enjoyed exploring nearby attractions like the picturesque Ward’s Lake and the Don Bosco Museum. The Lake’s serene atmosphere was calming, while the museum offered fascinating insights into the diverse cultures of the Northeast. The evening concluded at the Police Bazaar, where I enjoyed some delicious steaming momos and picked up handcrafted souvenirs.
Day 2: Cherrapunji – Land of Waterfalls and Mystical Caves
The next morning, I set out for Cherrapunji which is famous for its rain-kissed landscapes. The drive took us past mist-laden hills, and cascading streams, and the occasional rain added a dreamy vibe. My first stop was Nohkalikai Falls, India’s tallest plunge waterfall. The height, force and legend around these mesmerising waterfalls enchanted me completely.
Meghalaya has several caves and my trip here would have been incomplete if I did not see at least one of these. So, naturally, next on my itinerary was the spectacular Mawsmai Caves. The cave was a labyrinth of natural limestone formations and navigating the dimly lit interiors was intoxicating. Thrillophilia’s local guide ensured I didn’t miss a single highlight and shared interesting stories about the region.
Day 3: Nongriat Trek – The Iconic Living Root Bridges
Day three took me on a trek to the famous double-decker living root bridges in Nongriat. The trek, though challenging with over 3,000 steps, was worth every bit of effort. Thrillophilia had thoughtfully arranged for an experienced guide who kept the group motivated and informed. Reaching the living root bridges felt like stepping into a magical realm. These natural marvels, crafted by the Khasi tribe from rubber tree roots, were one of the most incredible natural wonders I had seen. Beneath the bridge, a crystal-clear stream flowed, tempting exhausted trekkers for a refreshing dip. The ascent back was undoubtedly tough, but the sense of accomplishment and the breathtaking views kept me going. The day’s adventures left me with a newfound appreciation and respect for Meghalaya’s natural and cultural treasures.
Day 4: Mawlynnong and Dawki
On day four, I headed to Mawlynnong, Asia’s cleanest village. It was a scenic region that lived up to its reputation with spotless lanes, blooming flower beds, and friendly locals. Walking through the village felt like stepping into a storybook. I also visited the Sky View Point which was a platform that offered panoramic views of the surrounding countryside and Bangladesh beyond the horizon.
The next stop was Dawki, famous for the Umngot River. As I boarded a wooden boat to explore the river, I was spellbound by the clarity of the water - it was so transparent that the boat seemed to float in mid-air! I also got a chance to enjoy a delicious riverside lunch which was arranged by Thrillophilia, making the day even more special. The day ended with a drive back to Shillong, and I couldn’t stop replaying the surreal sights of Dawki in my mind.
Day 5: Laitlum Canyons
On the last day of my journey, I visited the Laitlum Canyons, which is located just outside Shillong. This spot offered breathtaking views of endless hills, deep gorges, and winding trails. Standing at the edge of the canyons, I felt an overwhelming sense of peace and connection with nature. After a quiet morning at Laitlum, I returned to Shillong for some final moments of exploration and shopping. The transfer back to Guwahati was timely, and Thrillophilia ensured I reached the airport without a hitch.
