12 Honeymoon Ideas Abroad that Are Sure to Spark Envy

best honeymoons abroad

We all know what honeymoons are officially for - spending quality time with your new husband or wife in a place you've always dreamed of. But we all know that there's another unspoken reason to have a honeymoon - to spark envy in your friends and loved ones! With that in mind, I've written this blog post to give you some ideas of where you could go on honeymoon and what you could do once you're there. So grab your fiancé, sit back, relax and let's plan that honeymoon:

1. Stay in a Glass Igloo in Finland

For my snow bunnies out there we have Finland - the Easternmost Nordic country - and confusingly not a Scandinavian country due to geographical and linguistical reasons. Whilst it may not be Scandinavian like Norway and Sweden, it has a big thing in common with both: snow. So how can we incorporate that into your honeymoon? Cuddle in a glass igloo, of course! Now these glass igloos in Finnish Lapland are, luckily, heated, which means that you can stargaze all night long with bae, without stepping out into the cold! If you're lucky, the Northern Lights will make an unforgettable appearance.

2. Go on a Barge Cruise in France

Whilst Paris is still an envy-sparking honeymoon idea, some find it a bit overdone, a bit cliché and frankly a bit too crowded nowadays. For something more unique, try a barge cruise in France with your beloved. Sip wine and eat cashew cheese as the French landscape opens up in front of you two, symbolising the beautiful journey of marriage that you're just embarking on. Bonus idea: come back for special anniversaries to see how the landscape has changed and to discuss how you two have grown.

3. Private Island Escape in the Maldives

Book a luxurious overwater villa with a private infinity pool, endless turquoise views, and access to a pristine beach or a sunset dolphin cruise to up the romance factor! The Maldives have a reputation for being very expensive, but if you book the right villa on the right island it doesn't have to be - the luxury element comes from being in the middle of the ocean with your new spouse.

4. See the Grand Prix in Abu Dhabi

This one is for my car girlies. If the Grand Prix is your idea of fun and excitement then watching the Grand Prix in Abu Dhabi might just be a dream come true for you! Afterwards, you can dine your new other-half in some of the finest restaurants on the planet before sleeping in some of the most luxurious hotels in the world.

5. Hot Air Balloon Over Cappadocia, Turkey

Drift above the surreal fairy-tale landscape of Cappadocia at sunrise: the sky filled with colourful balloons will surely make for a picture-perfect moment you'll never forget (And your friends won't either, every time they come to your home and see your balloon honeymoon picture displayed proudly on the wall!)

6. Safari and Stargazing in Namibia

Explore the stunning red dunes of Sossusvlei, embark on a wildlife safari and sleep under the stars in a luxury desert lodge. Just like the Maldives, you can get luxury here from fancy hotels, but in my opinion the true luxury comes from seeing nature in all its glory.

7. Road Trip Down the Amalfi Coast, Italy

Italy will always have a soft-spot for me as it's where I spent my honeymoon. Here's an idea for you: rent a vintage convertible and cruise through one of the world's most scenic coastal drives.

Stop for lemon sorbet, arrabiata and wine in Positano and enjoy more romantic dinners overlooking the Mediterranean.

8. Stay in a Japanese Ryokan with Onsen Baths

Immerse yourself in Japanese culture by staying in a traditional inn with private hot springs (opt for one in Hakone or near Mount Fuji for unforgettable views!) I feel like the majority of people want to go to Japan, so this one is sure to spark envy back home.

9. Trek to Machu Picchu, Peru

Share the thrill of hiking the Inca Trail together, culminating in the awe-inspiring sight of Machu Picchu! Oh and don't forget to take a triumph photo as two humans who have made it down the aisle and to Machu Picchu. Celebrate your adventure and new marriage with a romantic stay in a luxury eco-lodge nearby (and please don't make a llama carry your bags!)

10. Glamping in Patagonia, Chile

Stay in a dome overlooking the jagged peaks of Torres del Paine, spending your days hiking and evenings sipping wine by a cosy fire! If you have the time, head over to Easter Island - located over 2000 miles from mainland Chile, it's still technically part of Chile and flights or boats are often cheaper from Chile than anywhere else. But more importantly, your honeymoon photos with the mysterious statues will be nothing short of iconic!

11. Explore the Ice Caves in Iceland

Like Japan, Iceland is a place that if I tell someone I've been there, they're usually envious. With your new husband or wife you can tour glittering blue ice caves and soak in the warm waters of the Blue Lagoon. A mix of adventure and relaxation for the perfect duo.

12. Sail Through the Whitsundays, Australia

Last but not least, we have Australia. I thought long and hard about what to suggest that you two love birds do there and landed on the Whitsundays. You can charter a yacht to explore the turquoise waters and white sands of the Whitsundays. Then anchor at Whitehaven Beach for a private picnic. Bliss.

Conclusion

So there we have it, hopefully there are at least one or two ideas on this list to get your honeymoon planning wheels turning. Remember, this is (hopefully) your one and only honeymoon ever so make sure it's everything you could want and more.

I tried to touch on different hobbies across different continents, but if you take one tip away from this post: look for something that you love doing as nearby as possible, because it's super easy to find jaw-dropping ideas anywhere in this world! (Photos by Saffu and Khamkéo on Unsplash)
