When Is the Best Time to Visit Australia? Should I Visit During the Winter?

Australia is one of the most diverse countries in the world, with a huge selection of natural wonders, varying landscapes and some of the most exotic flora and fauna.. Whether you should visit this amazing country is a no brainer, however, the question that most travellers tend to struggle with is when to visit.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Australia?

Due to its vast size, Australia has a unique climate and completely different weather seasons to the rest of the world. When it comes to availability of flights Australia is open to visitors all year long, and the time they decide to come highly depends on what you want to see and do during your visit. Here’s what you need to know before making that decision.

What Are the Four Seasons in Australia?

Just like the majority of the world, Australia experiences four different weather seasons every year. However, the months for each season are completely opposite. The winter months in Australia are during our summer (June to August), while their hottest time of the year, summer, is during our winter (December to February).

The summer season in Australia is particularly hot and humid across most of the country, with the temperatures soaring to as high as 37 °C in Melbourne and even higher towards the middle of the country. The winter season, on the other hand, tends to have spring-like weather (10-15 °C) with Southern areas experiencing slightly colder weather compared to the North of Australia.

When Is It Recommended to Visit Australia?

Generally, Australia reaches its peak number of visitors during the summer months. This is when most people are off work or schools for the holiday season and crave to escape somewhere hot and exotic. While it is by far the busiest, it’s not necessarily the recommended time to visit Australia, as you will encounter large crowds and high prices. As for the weather, some parts of the country may be highly unpleasant to visit due to the extreme heat and humidity.

Therefore, the best time to visit is during the Australian spring (September-November) or autumn (March-May). These are the months that Australia has comfortably warm temperatures that are great for exploring the most popular attractions. It is also much less busy during this time, meaning that you will avoid the high peak season prices too.

Should I Go to Australia During the Winter?

The winter season in Australia is by far the quietest, as the temperatures are at their lowest and the kids are back to school. Due to this, most of the travellers will not consider visiting during this time, however, this really depends on what kind of activities you are looking to do in Australia.

For instance, if you are a fan of surfing, the weather conditions are great for this during the winter (between March and September), which is when you can expect the biggest waves in the main cities, such as Sydney or Melbourne. Additionally, if you’d like to visit the tourist attractions situated in central Australia, such as the world-renowned Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park or the Alice Springs, the winter season will offer the most manageable temperatures for these areas (20-25 °C).

Wrap Up: the Best Time to Visit Australia

To conclude, there is no single best time to visit Australia - the country has lots to offer during each of its seasons and the time you decide to travel there will highly depend on your chosen activities and areas. While some people may want to travel during the summer for its buzzing vibe and selection of events, others will try to avoid the large crowds and extreme heat, choosing to visit off-season instead.
