5 Unforgettable Experiences to Have in Africa This Year

Africa is a bucketlist destination for many, and as a vast continent with everything you could ever want - from good food, to kind people, famous sites, wild animals, culture, history, beaches, mountains and so much more, how could it not be?

Still, there are some who are put off travelling to Africa, especially newbie travellers. To them I say: don't believe everything you see on the news, go and see it for yourself. And remember Africa is a gigantic place with something for everyone. To highlight this, I've written this post to inspire you to go:

1. Go On Safari
Africa is one of the only places left where you can see large wild animals in their natural habitat, and there's no better way to do this than with a Safari. Tick off the big five (lion, leopard, rhino, elephant and buffalo), see giraffes meander past like ancient dinosaurs, watch zebras feed their young. You'll see animals you know and love and you'll witness animals you've never heard of.

Just make sure when booking a tour that you go with an ethical one - one that treats its workers and the animals with respect.

2. Climb a mountain
When it comes to nature Africa has it all, especially when it comes to mountains. Like many others, I've always wanted to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, at nearly 6000 metres tall it's the tallest mountain in Africa - imagine watching the sunrise from there!

Climbing it takes about 6 days and you will need a guide - it's not for the feint hearted and the air gets thin up there.

3. Experience South Africa

I've been obsessed with South Africa ever since I found the band Die Antwort. South Africa is one of the more typically Western countries in Africa and you can do everything there, from wine tasting to golfing it's the perfect place for a holiday.

It's also one of the best places to see Great White sharks - go cage diving and come face to face with these beautiful, prehistoric beasts.

4. Beach
People don't always associate Africa with beach holidays, but they should because Africa has some crackers! And how could it not - it is an island continent after all. The Seychelles and Fuerteventura stand out with their crystal clear waters and white sand beaches, but don't miss places like Ghana and Nigeria either.

One of the upsides to Africa being less touristy than other continents means that finding a beach to enjoy by yourself is not hard in Africa.

5.  See the Pyramids

For anyone who grew up studying the ancient Egyptians or watching the blockbuster movie the Mummy, the Pyramids are unmissable. I went this year and they truly are awe-inspiring, in a freaky kind of way - I stayed nearby and had the weirdest dreams of my life. But it's not just freaky pyramids, Egypt is rich in culture, funny people and surprisingly there is really good vegan food in Egypt.

Conclusion
So there you have it, 5 unforgettable experiences to have in Africa this year from beaches to mountains, from South Africa to Egypt. I could go on forever with this post, but I'll leave it up to you - where and when will you be starting your African adventure?
