We have been staying in Gloucestershire this week, which we've enjoyed a lot - my mum's an excellent cook. Gloucestershire neighbours Herefordshire, so we crossed the borders to check out Ledbury, the Malvern hills and some ART.
Herefordshire is one of the least densely populated counties in the country, so if you are sick and tired of over crowded Britain, and want to see lots of green head to Herefordshire.
The Malvern Hills start (or end) just outside Ledbury, so we climbed up them:
Tanbay's favourite English town is Ledbury, which lives in Herefordshire. It's dominated by the Market House, which dates from 1617:
Most of the alleyways are tiny and charming:
And there are lots of cute little independent shops:
and organic food shops:
My favourite shop is the Tinsmiths:
Inside the Tinsmiths are lots of beautiful arty pieces that you can buy or just look at, but it's my favourite shop mainly because of the building itself.
But other than the ancient, aesthetically appealing architecture, Herefordshire is famous for it's ART. Every September, the county hosts Herefordshire Art Week which is an amazing art event. Artists and lovers of art open up their homes/gardens/workplaces for anyone to come and view art (and hopefully buy a couple of pieces).
Every form of art is displayed from bog standard (but beautiful) paintings:
To more 'art textile' type pieces:
To good old textiles:
To pottery:
To oodles of sculptures:
We always try to buy at least one piece per year, unless it's a really really bad year ;):
My mum's partner John bought her one of these cuties:
My grandma bought me this one, but as I have no house, my mum keeps it for me in her garden :)
This little guy below started off life on top of a long pole, which could be prodded into the ground, but at the time we were living in a tiny flat in Birmingham, with no ground of our own. So I explained my predicament to the artist, and asked if he could make the pole into a bottom. He complied and here is the result:
He actually really liked it too, so now makes both poled robins and bottomed robins.
So I highly recommend that you go to Herefordshire, especially during Art Week.
